Inner thigh chafing is a common problem that affects many women, especially during hot and humid weather. It can happen while walking, exercising, travelling or carrying out daily activities. Although it is common, many women do not talk about it and continue to deal with the discomfort.

According to dermatologist Dr Saguna Puttoo, inner thigh chafing can usually be prevented and managed with the right clothing and skincare habits.

What causes chafing

Inner thigh chafing occurs when the skin rubs against itself or against clothing. Heat, sweat and friction can make the problem worse.

Sweat can soften the skin, making it more sensitive and likely to become irritated. Wearing tight or non-breathable clothing may increase sweating and discomfort. In some cases, the skin may crack, which can increase the risk of infection.

Dr Puttoo says symptoms such as redness, burning, cracked skin, continuous irritation and a bad smell should not be ignored, as they may be signs of an infection.

Ways to reduce irritation

Experts recommend wearing breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics that help keep the skin dry. Comfortable underwear with proper coverage can also reduce friction between the thighs.

Dr Puttoo advises using barrier creams, such as zinc oxide creams, to protect the skin and reduce rubbing. Ice packs may help soothe irritation if chafing has already occurred.

She also suggests avoiding scented powders and moisturisers, as they can sometimes increase skin irritation.

Experts say women should choose innerwear that is comfortable, flexible and made from breathable materials. Soft waistbands, proper fit and quick-drying fabrics can help improve comfort and reduce the risk of chafing.

If irritation continues or becomes severe, medical advice should be sought. Specialists say that simple steps such as wearing suitable clothing and keeping the skin dry can go a long way in preventing inner thigh chafing and improving daily comfort.
